Pope Leo XIV led the Angelus prayer on Sunday, a day after being discharged from Rome's Gemelli hospital. At noon he appeared at the window of the Apostolic Palace and was applauded by the faithful in St Peter's Square. "I really felt your support, thank you!" he said, thanking the doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital. His time in hospital made him feel close to all those going through illness, he said.

The Pope underwent surgery on 13 October; according to his doctors, the lower lobe of his right lung was removed because of an adenocarcinoma. He was discharged on Saturday after five days. Surgeon Stefano Margaritora described his condition as satisfactory, and recovery is expected to take a couple of weeks.

Leo XIV said he would gradually resume his activities during "this delicate phase". His trip to Latin America is scheduled to begin on 6 November. According to Margaritora, there are "no clinical reasons" why the journey should not take place.
