The Bundesliga is enjoying the highest-scoring start in its history. After five rounds, 172 goals have been scored in 45 matches, according to German sports agency SID. The previous record at this stage was 170 goals, set in the 1984-85 season.
Last weekend alone produced 35 goals in nine games, highlighted by RB Leipzig's 6-0 rout of Eintracht Frankfurt and a seven-goal, 4-3 win for Leverkusen at Mainz. Matches involving last-place Borussia Mönchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt have each produced 25 goals, the most of any club.
That works out to about 3.8 goals per game. The full-season record belongs to 1983-84, when 1,097 goals were scored in 306 matches, an average of 3.58. If the current pace holds, that mark could also fall.
