Germany's conservative CDU/CSU bloc edged up in a new INSA poll published shortly before the CDU leadership retreat. The survey for Bild am Sonntag puts the bloc at 19%, one point higher than a week earlier. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) remains the strongest party on 30%, 11 points ahead.
The Social Democrats (SPD) lost one point to 13%. The Greens stand at 14% and the Left Party at 10%. The Free Democrats (4%) and the BSW (3%) would fall short of the 5% threshold. The governing coalition has a combined 32%, unchanged from the previous week.
According to the polling site DAWUM, INSA surveyed 1,207 eligible voters by phone and online from Oct. 5 to 9. Arithmetically, the conservatives and the AfD would have a majority together, but the CDU and CSU rule out cooperating with the AfD. All polls carry a margin of error.
