SC Freiburg moved to the top of the Bundesliga after the fifth round, beating promoted Schalke 04 2-1 on Sunday evening. Maximilian Eggestein put Julian Schuster's side ahead after a corner in the 10th minute before Swiss defender Adrian Gantenbein equalised in the 30th.
Freiburg's Yuito Suzuki was shown a second yellow card in the 64th minute for a foul on Soufiane El-Faouzi. Despite being a man down, substitute Keisuke Goto headed in the winner from a Vincenzo Grifo cross five minutes from time.
With 13 points, Freiburg now lead Borussia Dortmund, level on points, and Bayern Munich, who both drew 2-2 this weekend. "Wir sind glücklich über diesen Saisonstart" ("We are happy with this start to the season"), defender Matthias Ginter told DAZN, as fans chanted "Spitzenreiter" ("league leaders").
