President Donald Trump announced on Sunday an immediate halt to attacks on energy facilities in the war between Russia and Ukraine. "Effective immediately, there is an ENERGY CEASEFIRE in the War between Russia and Ukraine," he wrote on Truth Social. "Both parties have agreed. Do not break it!" Trump gave no details on the terms, start time or duration. Axios reported that a similar announcement last month was never confirmed by either side, and strikes on power plants and refineries continued.

The announcement caught Kyiv off guard. A source close to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told CNN it was news to the government, and another official said they learned of it the same way the public did. Zelenskyy nonetheless signaled openness. "OK, if they want energy ceasefire, we are open for this," he told ABC News. On X, he said Ukraine was ready to stop striking Russian oil refineries if Russia stopped hitting Ukraine's energy grid, adding that any de-escalation must be reciprocal and backed by guarantees.

There was no immediate comment from Moscow; CNN said it had asked the Kremlin and the White House for details. The post caps a turbulent few days: on Friday, after a call with Vladimir Putin, Trump announced eased sanctions on Russian diesel, drawing sharp criticism from Kyiv, and on Saturday he urged Ukraine to find a new president. Zelenskyy said on Sunday, according to Axios, that Ukraine would hold elections if Russia accepted a 60-day ceasefire.
