U.S. President Donald Trump told a campaign rally in Tennessee on Saturday that Germany's shift to renewable energy had brought the country to the brink of ruin. "They were about two days away from extinction," he said, according to the German news agency dpa. "Show me a country with green energy and I'll show you a bankrupt country." Trump offered no evidence.
In a speech lasting more than an hour, Trump also said "we don't want windmills." He called French President Emmanuel Macron "actually a nice guy" but said he had threatened him in a phone call with 250% tariffs on French wine and champagne because French drugmakers would not offer lower prices in the United States.
The remarks come ahead of the Nov. 3 midterm elections, in which about a third of the Senate and the entire House of Representatives are up for election. There was no immediate reaction from the German government.
