German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul pledged Germany's continued support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday following the row between Kyiv and Washington. Speaking in Berlin before a meeting of the Christian Democrats' leadership, he said Germany would fully support the president in carrying out his difficult office, according to the dpa news agency.
"We don't need less, we need more pressure on Putin so that he is ready to negotiate," Wadephul said. He noted that Russia kept bombing Ukraine while a Ukrainian delegation was in Miami discussing a negotiated settlement with the United States. He did not directly respond to U.S. President Donald Trump's call for a new Ukrainian president.
Trump said in Washington on Saturday that it was time for Ukraine to get a new president. Zelenskyy, for his part, has criticized a U.S.-Russia deal to lift sanctions on sales of Russian diesel.
