The third instalment of the '28 Years Later' zombie series faces further delay. At an audience Q&A at the BFI London Film Festival, director Danny Boyle said the project is "on the back burner at the moment", as reported by Deadline. He had hoped to shoot the film later in 2026.
Boyle mainly pointed to screenwriter Alex Garland, who is busy with a big project of his own, an adaptation of the video game 'Elden Ring'. According to Boyle, a script for the third film already exists and contains "a lot of Cillian Murphy". Earlier this year he had explained that the story's location can only be filmed at certain times of the year and that they had missed the window: "Hopefully, fingers crossed, next year."
The two previous films, '28 Years Later' and '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple', fell short of box-office expectations. According to The A.V. Club, however, Boyle did not attribute the delay to their performance.
