DAX back above 25,000 points as Deutsche Telekom shares slump 8%

The DAX rose 1.13% to 25,087 points but ended the week about 0.6% lower. Cheaper oil and falling bond yields helped. Telekom suffered from SpaceX's push into US mobile services.

On Friday, 9 October, the DAX benchmark index (Germany's 40 largest listed companies) rose 1.13% to 25,087.27 points at the Xetra close, back above the 25,000 mark. Over the week it was still down about 0.6%. The MDAX of mid-sized companies gained 1.64% to 29,989.90 points, the SDAX about 1.5% and the TecDAX about 0.3%. The Euro Stoxx 50 closed 0.76% higher at 6,173.37 points. There is no trading at the weekend.

According to dpa-AFX, oil and bond markets provided support. US President Donald Trump denied reports of new US strikes on Iran before the 3 November midterm elections and spoke of constructive talks with Tehran. Brent crude fell to $103.20 a barrel by midday (−1.04%). Bond yields declined, which makes shares relatively more attractive.

The biggest DAX loser was Deutsche Telekom, down about 7.9%. SpaceX wants to buy a large package of US radio spectrum and become a mobile operator. Telekom controls T-Mobile US, whose shares fell about 11%. Software stocks such as SAP (+3.7%) gained. In the MDAX, Salzgitter jumped 13.4% after a UBS upgrade.

The ECB euro reference rate was $1.1206 (Thursday: $1.1186).
