Russian airstrikes on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia killed at least 17 people, including three children, Ukrainian officials said Saturday. At least 16 people were wounded, two of them children, according to the State Emergency Service. Police said Russian aircraft dropped five guided aerial bombs on residential neighborhoods early in the morning, two of which hit apartment blocks. The toll climbed repeatedly through the day, from four to eight, then 12, 15 and finally 17 by the afternoon, public broadcaster Suspilne reported, citing regional officials.
Regional officials said at least 26 residential buildings were damaged. Rescuers kept searching the rubble, and 12 residents were still unaccounted for in the morning. Guided bombs also hit the city on Friday, killing one man. Zaporizhzhia lies a few dozen kilometers from the front line. Ukraine's air force said Russia launched 160 drones across the country overnight and that 117 were shot down or neutralized.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy tied the attack to a deal on Russian diesel supplies announced by President Donald Trump on Friday, saying Russia had "thanked" the world for easing sanctions with five guided bombs and that "different signals are needed." There was no immediate comment from Moscow. The strikes followed talks in Miami between Ukrainian and European officials in a renewed U.S.-backed push to end the war.
