"Ragebait" is Germany's youth word of the year for 2026, publisher Pons Langenscheidt announced Saturday at the Frankfurt Book Fair. The English term describes social media content deliberately designed to provoke anger or outrage, such as false reports or absurd opinions posted to gain reach.

The vote was close: "ragebait" won 36.5% of the vote, ahead of "peak," meaning something exceptionally good, with 33.8% and "crashout," meaning a complete loss of composure, with 29.7%. Young people aged 11 to 20 were eligible to vote, and according to broadcaster ZDF nearly one million took part since late May.

"The narrow result shows that all three terms have a firm place in the vocabulary of Generations Z and Alpha," said Artur Raiser of Pons Langenscheidt. Last year's winner was "Das crazy."
