Autonomous driving company Waymo is expanding the areas where its driverless cars carry passengers by nearly 250 square miles (about 650 square kilometers) across five U.S. cities. The new territory will be switched on over the coming week, the company said on Tuesday, according to tech site Electrek.

In Los Angeles, service now extends south along the coast through Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach to Torrance. In the San Francisco Bay Area, the cars now reach the Berryessa station of the BART rail system in San Jose. Nashville's zone grows to the south, Orlando's eastern coverage nearly doubles, and in San Diego service extends north to La Jolla. Waymo did not say how many vehicles it is adding.

According to Electrek, Waymo operates in 15 U.S. metro areas and provides more than 500,000 paid rides a week. In the second quarter of 2026, its vehicles logged 3.9 million miles a week with no human behind the wheel. Waymo is also trialing some highway operations in California and mapping Toronto for a 2028 launch.
