Brighton & Hove Albion beat Crystal Palace 5-0 in Sunday’s derby. After a Jaydee Canvot own goal in the fourth minute, Diego Gómez scored from more than 50 meters in the seventh over the stranded Walter Benítez, and Yasin Ayari made it 3-0 in the 10th. Charalampos Kostoulas and Jack Hinshelwood added goals after the break. According to The Analyst, Gómez’s strike was the longest-range Premier League goal since Wayne Rooney’s in November 2017.
“Only one feeling – shame,” Palace coach Pierre Sage told the BBC. “It’s my fault because I am the coach.” Asked whether he would get time to turn things around, the Frenchman said: “I don’t know.” Sage succeeded Oliver Glasner in the summer and has four wins, one draw and five losses from his 10 games.
Brighton coach Fabian Hürzeler joked, according to The Telegraph, that he does not have Gómez practicing shots from 50 meters in training. His team has 16 points, while Palace are 14th with seven and play at Beşiktaş in the Europa League on Thursday.
