Fibre up to 50 Gbit/s: Nokia card supports four PON generations on every port
Nokia has unveiled a line card for fibre connections that supports GPON, 10G, 25G and 50G PON on the same port. A product video shows the card, which is due to be available in 2027.

Finnish network equipment maker Nokia unveiled a new line card for passive optical networks (PON) on 12 October – the technology used to distribute fibre connections to homes. The card has 16 ports, each supporting GPON, 10G, 25G and 50G PON, enabling fibre speeds of up to 50 Gbit/s. Nokia also presents the card in a video on its official YouTube channel.
It is built on Nokia's in-house Quillion chip and multi-PON optical modules. This is meant to let operators add or switch PON generations on the same port and the same fibre – for example offering 10G and 25G PON today and adding 50G PON later. According to Nokia, upstream latency drops by up to four times; quantum-safe encryption and authentication are also included.
"The future of broadband is becoming harder to predict," said Maryam Chaudry, SVP and GM of Fixed Networks at Nokia. According to Nokia, general availability is planned for 2027.
