Three children ages 5, 8 and 11 and a teacher were killed Thursday afternoon in an attack on Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. A 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were hospitalized in critical condition, according to media reports. Police said the first 911 call came in at 12:59 p.m. and officers arrived minutes later.
Police said the suspect was a 16-year-old Bend resident who has not been publicly identified. He allegedly forced his way in by firing at locked doors. A community member who saw him enter followed him into the school and shot him dead, Police Chief Mike Krantz said. Investigators did not discuss a motive, and the FBI is assisting local authorities.
Gov. Tina Kotek said her heart was "absolutely broken" and thanked the community member, saying the person's actions carry a heavy emotional burden. Sen. Ron Wyden called for "common-sense gun laws." All 32 schools in the district were closed Friday. By CNN's count, it is the 36th shooting on K-12 school grounds in the U.S. this year.
