Workers from the culture sector and Bulgarian Posts briefly blocked a central boulevard in the northeastern city of Shumen, demanding a pay rise of at least 10% from next year. They were joined by employees from healthcare, education, the railways and the private sector. "For now we want 10%, but 10% is not enough," one protester said. The action was symbolic and held during the lunch break.
Protesters said that despite their qualifications they earn close to the minimum wage, which deters young people, while rising prices erode their purchasing power. For postal workers it was the second protest this year, after they received only a minimal raise earlier in 2026. Talk of a wage freeze also fuelled the anger. The KNSB trade union confederation said protests would continue in other cities.
