A 14-year-old pupil opened fire at a middle school in Aubagne, east of Marseille, on Monday. The 53-year-old headmaster and a 37-year-old teacher were hit by shotgun pellets and a third person was grazed. Authorities said the injuries were not life-threatening, and no pupils were hurt. According to prosecutor Audrey Jouaneton, the teenager had brought the weapon in a guitar case and fired at least four shots before a staff member disarmed him.
Police detained the suspect, and his father was also taken into custody. An attempted murder investigation has been opened. The motive is unclear. Prefect Jacques Witkowski said the teenager was not known for any history of delinquency or radicalisation. Investigators see no link to the high school protests that have gripped France for weeks.
Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez said investigators were trying to understand how the teenager came to have the gun. President Emmanuel Macron praised the staff's "composure and exemplary response." Education Minister Édouard Geffray said: "Schools can't do everything," calling for a societal response. The town is offering pupils psychological support.
