The memory crisis could make the next console generation considerably more expensive. According to insider KeplerL2, who VGC says has accurately reported on AMD hardware in the past, memory and storage (RAM and NAND) alone already cost more than $680 per PlayStation 6. When Sony finalised the console’s design, these components were much cheaper, the insider said. The claim comes from a post on the NeoGAF forum and is unconfirmed; Sony has not commented.

The background is a sharp rise in memory chip prices, driven above all by demand from AI data centres. A PS5 now costs $200 or £200 more than at launch. The PS6 was reportedly targeting a release in 2027 at the earliest; Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has already said memory costs will affect the price and availability of Microsoft’s next console, Project Helix.

Analysts expect high prices: Joost van Dreunen, head of Aldora, told GamesIndustry.biz that at this rate the next generation may not release until 2028 – and that more than $1,000 would then be the floor. Manu Rosier of market researcher Newzoo, by contrast, expects base models to stay under $999 for psychological and marketing reasons, though premium versions could cost more.
