Swedish games studio Liquid Swords has gone bankrupt. According to business newspaper Breakit, cited by Insider Gaming and M&A Insights, the proceedings opened on 12 October after the studio had failed to pay its staff for several months. Nearly 30 employees are now set to receive state support.
Liquid Swords was founded in 2020 by Christofer Sundberg, co-founder of Avalanche Studios and creative lead of the Just Cause series. The studio’s only released game, the action title Samson, came out in April 2026 and was poorly received by critics: Metacritic lists a score of 51. Chinese company NetEase invested 220 million kronor in 2022, according to Breakit, and is now among the major creditors.
Trustee Karl Björlin of law firm Cirio is running the business for now and seeking a buyer, preferably for the studio as a whole; Sundberg himself is considered a possible bidder. It is unclear whether the rights to Samson can be part of a sale – they were pledged as collateral for earlier loans that have not been repaid.
