Bulgaria’s general assembly of prosecutors, convened to elect their representatives to the Supreme Judicial Council, opened in Sofia on Saturday an hour behind schedule. Only 449 of the 1,570 prosecutors on the voter list had registered at the set time, short of a quorum, Fakti.bg reported. Under the Judiciary Act, the assembly then goes ahead an hour later regardless of attendance. Some 502 prosecutors were present when it opened, according to Paragraf.bg.
Prosecutors are hearing 25 candidates on Saturday, with the vote scheduled for next Saturday, Oct. 24. Acting Prosecutor General Vanya Stefanova said the number of nominees showed “serious interest and real competition,” the BTA news agency reported, adding she hoped “the most worthy and honest professionals” would be elected.
Stefanova also said she hoped it would be the last such assembly led by an acting prosecutor general and that parliament would fill its own quota on the council.
