Fuel remains considerably cheaper in Bulgaria than in Germany. According to Fuelo.net, A95 petrol cost an average of 1.67 euros per litre there on 17 October, diesel 1.91 euros and autogas 0.62 euros. In Germany, average prices on 16 October were around 2.19 euros for Super E5, 2.14 euros for E10 and 2.28 euros for diesel, according to data from the Market Transparency Unit for Fuels analysed by Münster Aktuell.
That makes a litre of diesel in Germany about 37 cents more expensive, and Super E5 about 52 cents dearer than A95. For a 50-litre diesel fill-up, the difference comes to almost 18.50 euros. Prices also vary within Bulgaria: according to Fuelo.net, A95 sells for between 1.54 and 1.79 euros per litre and diesel for between 1.79 and 2.04 euros. The KARAI platform reports similar averages for 16 October of 1.65 euros for A95 and 1.90 euros for diesel.
In Germany, a fuel tax cut applies from 1 October to 31 December, lowering prices by around 17 cents per litre including VAT, according to Münster Aktuell. Prices nevertheless remain high. Reasons cited by the portal include the war between the US and Iran with risks to tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, low water on the Rhine and a higher CO₂ price. The comparison covers pump prices only – incomes and living costs also differ widely between the two countries.
