The CDU in North Rhine-Westphalia is losing significant support in a new Insa poll. Premier Hendrik Wüst's party stands at 26 per cent according to figures published on Friday, eight points down on the previous Insa survey six months ago. The AfD gains four points to 21 per cent. The SPD remains at 18 per cent, the Greens reach 16 per cent (up one) and the Left Party 10 per cent (up one).

The FDP is unchanged at 4 per cent and the BSW at 3 per cent – neither would enter the state parliament. On these figures, the governing coalition of CDU and Greens would no longer have a majority of its own. Insa surveyed 1,000 people online from 6 to 13 October; the margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

A Forsa poll for the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger at the end of September had put the CDU at 29 per cent, the AfD at 22, the Greens at 18 and the SPD at 14 per cent. North Rhine-Westphalia elects a new state parliament in about six months. Polls are snapshots, not forecasts of the election result.
