Bulgaria's parliament on Thursday adopted amendments to the Insurance Code at second reading. Under the changes, insurers must offer compulsory third-party motor liability insurance for certain vehicles, including motorcycles and campers, for terms shorter than one year – but no shorter than 30 days. The change is aimed at owners of vehicles that are not used all year round.
Petar Petrov of the Vazrazhdane party called for buyers to be offered one-, three- and six-month policies, and the chair of the economic policy committee, Stefan Belchev (Progressive Bulgaria), said he agreed. Vladislav Goranov (GERB-SDS) abstained, saying that "nothing will change" with the adoption of the text and warning that insurers might refuse such policies despite the obligation. Vladislav Panev (Democratic Bulgaria) warned of drafting errors that he said could lead to "thousands of court cases" – for instance involving drivers whose insurers had lost their licences.
