A centre of excellence for defence technologies and dual-use solutions is to be built in Kazanlak. The CEDAR project was presented on Thursday, the BTA news agency reported. It will cost 43.47 million euros and is funded by the EU's Just Transition Fund. Its partners are the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, Sofia Tech Park, the Technical University of Sofia and the National Military University.

Eight high-tech laboratories will develop and test military and civilian technologies – from advanced materials, additive manufacturing and digital twins to cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and autonomous systems, as well as propulsion, protection and counter-drone technologies. Construction is due to be completed by the end of 2028, with the laboratories equipped in 2029. Around 60 researchers are to work there; the centre aims to shorten development times and support certification and testing.

Kazanlak Mayor Galina Stoyanova called the town the best location from a logistical standpoint. She pointed to Arsenal, the largest defence company, as well as a strong mechanical engineering base and skilled staff. According to project representatives, the centre could serve defence companies across the Balkans and lay the groundwork for a future technology park.
