US President Donald Trump has held out the prospect of an early end to the war with Iran. The war will end "very soon" and oil will then "drop like a rock", Trump said on Monday, including at a campaign rally in Youngstown, Ohio. Iran wants to make a deal but "they don't know how to", he said, adding that the 3 November congressional elections would not affect his Iran policy.
Trump accused Yemen's Houthis of "misbehaving very badly". At an appearance in Tennessee on Saturday, he had said of the attack on Riyadh's airport: "The Saudis are good fighters. But I think the attack was a terrible thing." Brent crude rose above $105 a barrel on Monday, a two-week high.
No breakthrough is in sight in Tehran. Foreign ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said Iran was reviewing the latest US proposal, with messages passing through mediators. Former Revolutionary Guards commander Mohsen Rezaei had already called the US response to Iran's seven conditions "inadequate".
