Japanese IT group NTT Data is in the final stages of talks with Anthropic about building a data centre in Osaka, business daily Nikkei reports. Reuters picked up the report on 13 October. It would be the Claude developer's first dedicated data centre facility in Japan.

According to Nikkei, construction costs could reach up to one trillion yen, or about 6.3 billion dollars. The facility is to have a power intake of up to 500 megawatts; partial operations could begin as early as 2028. The companies aim to sign an agreement by the end of Japan's fiscal year on 31 March.

NTT declined to comment, and there was initially no statement from Anthropic. The report cites multiple sources; the project has not yet been officially confirmed.
