A Berlin police patrol car has crashed in the Tegel Airport tunnel on the A111 motorway in the Reinickendorf district. According to police, the vehicle was travelling out of the city with emergency lights and siren at around 6:40 p.m. on Friday when the driver lost control for reasons that are not yet clear.

The car veered left, drove over the emergency walkway and hit the tunnel wall. The officers on board were not injured, but the vehicle is no longer roadworthy. The motorway remained closed until about 9:30 p.m. for recovery and accident investigation.

A specialist unit of Police Directorate 1 (North) has taken over the investigation.
