Midterms: Democrats lead by 8 points in polling average as even Kansas tightens

Three days before the vote, Democrats lead the generic ballot 51.4% to 43.2%. Analysts say the House is almost certain to flip, while control of the Senate remains up in the air.

Three days before the Nov. 3 congressional elections, Democrats hold a clear lead in national polling. The RealClearPolling average of the generic congressional ballot puts Democrats at 51.4% and Republicans at 43.2%. In an Economist/YouGov survey, 44% of registered voters said they expect Democrats to control the House, against 31% who expect Republicans to.

Kyle Kondik of Sabato’s Crystal Ball told Al Jazeera that a big Democratic lead in generic ballot polling “suggests that the House is almost certain to flip to Democrats,” but said the Senate is “much more up in the air.” CBS News tracks 11 Senate battlegrounds, five of them toss-ups: Maine, Michigan, Ohio, Texas and Alaska.

The race is unexpectedly tight in traditionally Republican Kansas, where an Emerson College poll shows Democrat Adam Hamilton leading Sen. Roger Marshall 49% to 45%. President Donald Trump, who had canceled appearances in Kansas and Iowa, now plans to campaign in both states on Sunday.
