Seven wagons of a freight train carrying ammonium nitrate derailed in the Danube city of Ruse, in the area of the local locomotive and wagon plant. Part of the cargo spilled, regional police spokeswoman Daniela Malcheva said.
Officers found a white granular substance at two spots, totaling about 20 kilograms. Samples of the substance and of the surrounding soil were taken for laboratory testing, and a police duty team documented the scene.
The Second District Police Department in Ruse has opened pre-trial proceedings. The cause of the derailment has not yet been established. There was no immediate information on injuries or on any disruption to rail traffic.
