The WBC welterweight champion has named a date. "We are going to be fighting on February 6. We might fight Teofimo Lopez or Floyd Mayweather," Ryan Garcia said during a live stream on Kick, according to Boxing News. He did not name a venue.
Just over a week ago Garcia claimed on X that he and Mayweather had agreed to a professional fight for his title. According to Sportsnaut, Mayweather (50-0) has not confirmed this; a source close to the situation told Uncrowned that no serious negotiations had taken place. Garcia's promoter Oscar De La Hoya told FightHype, according to Boxing News, that he too was surprised: "Just like everyone else, I saw it on the internet."
Mayweather is now 49 and has not fought professionally since beating Conor McGregor in August 2017. Garcia won the WBC title against Mario Barrios in February and defended it in September with a second-round win over Conor Benn. Lopez is the WBA welterweight champion.
