Alexander Zverev narrowly avoided an opening-round defeat at the ATP 500 event in Vienna. The top seed beat 20-year-old Spanish wild card Martín Landaluce, ranked No. 67, 7-5, 3-6, 7-6 (13-11) after 3 hours and 5 minutes. Both players missed match points in a dramatic tie-break before Zverev converted his fifth, according to the Austrian Tennis Federation (ÖTV). "Martin played a hell of a match," Zverev said, according to Tennis Now. "I know I have to improve, for sure."

In the round of 16, Zverev will face the winner of Wednesday's match between Tallon Griekspoor and Brandon Nakashima. If he reaches the quarter-finals, he will become the new world No. 1 from next Monday, ORF reports. In the current rankings Jannik Sinner leads on 10,450 points, ahead of Zverev on 9,750. Carlos Alcaraz is also through to the last 16 after a straight-sets win over Karen Khachanov.

For Grigor Dimitrov, his first match in more than a month ended in the first round. The 35-year-old Bulgarian, playing on a wild card, lost to fourth seed Flavio Cobolli of Italy 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 after 2 hours and 15 minutes. Cobolli now faces his compatriot Matteo Berrettini.
