Borussia Dortmund reached the last 16 of the German Cup with a 3-2 win over Werder Bremen in the second round on Tuesday night, having led 2-0 at half-time. Serhou Guirassy (6th minute) and Carney Chukwuemeka (17th) gave the hosts an early lead. Kick-off was delayed by five minutes after pyrotechnics left smoke over the pitch.

Werder coach Daniel Thioune initially rested Niclas Füllkrug and brought the striker on after almost an hour. Füllkrug converted a penalty in the 65th minute and equalised four minutes later with a long-range shot. Marcel Sabitzer settled the tie with a free kick three minutes into stoppage time.

Dortmund coach Niko Kovac told broadcaster ZDF he was relieved to go through but unhappy with his team's performance. The defeat ended Bremen's run of six games without a loss. The second round continues on Wednesday evening, including Bayern Munich against Magdeburg and Leverkusen against Nuremberg (both 20:45 CET).
