Niclas Füllkrug's cup night in Dortmund ended in elimination despite two goals. The Werder striker, whose possible return to the national team has been debated for weeks, came on after the break, converted a penalty in the 65th minute and equalised for 2-2 in the 69th. In the third minute of stoppage time, Marcel Sabitzer settled it with a free kick to make it 3-2 to BVB. "Unfortunately we then dropped a bit deeper and couldn't hit them on the counter," Füllkrug said. For Dortmund, Germany international Maximilian Beier set up the early lead, while defensive leader Nico Schlotterbeck admitted after the game that his side became nervous after Werder pulled one back.

Said El Mala made a statement of his own: the Cologne international scored twice in a 5-0 (1-0) win over Union Berlin. "In the 90 minutes we played, an enormous weight fell off our shoulders," the 20-year-old said after the game. For Cologne, the rout came as a relief after whistles and criticism at the weekend.

Earlier in the evening, Eintracht Frankfurt won 3-1 at Hamburg thanks to goals from Germany internationals Robin Koch, Jonathan Burkardt and Younes Ebnoutalib. On Wednesday, VfB Stuttgart visit Paderborn (18:00), while Bayern Munich host Magdeburg and Leverkusen face Nürnberg (both 20:45).
