SV Darmstadt 98 are into the round of 16 of the German Cup. The bottom team in the second division won 2-0 at Bundesliga club SV Elversberg on Tuesday night. Lars Kehl, who came on in the fourth minute for the injured Nicolas Verkooijen, curled a free kick from about 25 meters into the top corner in the sixth minute. Milan Smit doubled the lead from close range in the 56th after a low corner from Lance Duijvestijn.

Elversberg, eighth in the Bundesliga, had taken 18 shots to Darmstadt's two by the time of the second goal. Noel Futkeu hit the crossbar in the 61st minute. The Saarland club is playing its first cup campaign as a Bundesliga team and has never reached the round of 16.

"An absolute dream, dream, dream goal," Darmstadt coach Florian Kohfeldt said. "For a club like Darmstadt 98, it is anything but a given to be in the cup's round of 16." Darmstadt reached the last 16 for the third straight year. The draw is on Sunday, with the games on Dec. 1 and 2.
