Espanyol fired coach Manolo González after the club's first-round exit from the Copa del Rey. The La Liga side lost 4-3 after extra time at fourth-tier Sestao River on Tuesday. Roberto forced extra time with a penalty in the 90th minute, but Jon Rojo decided the match in the 121st, bundling a loose ball over the line in the box.

The club announced the decision the same evening. Espanyol have eight points from 10 matches — two wins, two draws and six losses — and sit in the relegation zone. On Sunday they lost 2-1 at newly promoted Racing Santander. González took over in March 2024, led the team to promotion and kept it up twice, coaching 107 competitive matches.

He is the third La Liga coach fired this season, after Valencia's Carlos Corberán and Osasuna's Luis Miguel Ramis. Espanyol are owned by Alan Pace's Velocity Sports group, which also fired Burnley coach Nicky Hayen the same week. Reserve-team coach Sergio García is leading training on Wednesday as the club searches for a successor. Espanyol face Villarreal on Friday.
