Manchester United coach Michael Carrick appears to be on the brink after Sunday's 3-0 home loss to Bournemouth. Sky Sports News reported Monday that club insiders expect him to be dismissed, with chief executive Omar Berrada and football director Jason Wilcox set to make a recommendation to co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe. The club has not announced a decision.
Sky named former Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann and Eddie Howe, who stepped down at Newcastle in July, as frontrunners to replace him; both would be available immediately and without compensation. Unai Emery and Antonio Conte were also considered but are not among the favorites, the report said.
After their worst start to a Premier League season, United are just one point above the relegation zone. Carrick, who signed a two-year contract in May, said after the game: "What is next? I don't know."
