The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has charged only one of the three people detained with premeditated murder – the alleged perpetrator. Prosecutors say there is sufficient evidence that former MEP Slavi Binev was killed with a single shot to the face at his home in Sofia's Pavlovo district on Saturday. The accused is being held for 72 hours, and prosecutors have requested that he be remanded in custody. The two other people present at the scene were not involved, according to investigators. Investigators have the pistol believed to have been used; the motive is still being established.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev said on Sunday that such killings would "most likely" continue because "the oligarchy is losing control." "This is about a redistribution of money," he said. The state was "returning to its functions" and would be more active in solving and punishing such crimes.
It is Bulgaria's third high-profile killing in three months. The Interior Ministry had classified the case as a personal dispute; Radev did not confirm that version, saying details would emerge once the investigation is over.
