A canister left under a district heating pipe triggered a major police operation in Berlin's Biesdorf district on Thursday. A patrol discovered the container next to the railway line between Biesdorf and Wuhletal, below the bridge at Blumberger Damm, a police spokeswoman confirmed to the German Press Agency (dpa). Police cordoned off a wide area, temporarily halting long-distance and S-Bahn services on the section.

Police specialists called to the scene examined the canister and found that it contained petrol. Rail traffic resumed shortly afterwards. It was initially unclear exactly when the canister was found, how much petrol it held and who had left it there. Police gave no information on possible suspects or a motive.
