MUBI has released the official trailer for 'Coward', the new film from Belgian director Lukas Dhont ('Close'). The drama opens in US cinemas on 25 December. Belgium has selected it as its official entry for the Oscar for best international feature film.
The film is set in the Belgian trenches during the First World War: young soldier Pierre meets Francis, who plans to stage a theatre show at the front, and their bond grows into a romance. Dhont co-wrote the screenplay with Angelo Tijssens.
'Coward' competed at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where Emmanuel Macchia (Pierre) and Valentin Campagne (Francis) jointly won the best actor award. According to VRT, it opened in Flemish cinemas on 21 October.
