Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is out today on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2. After an initial campaign-only embargo, reviews covering multiplayer and the DMZ extraction mode are now in. The PC version sits at 84 on Metacritic; Game Informer gives it 8.5 out of 10, GameSpot 8 out of 10 for campaign and DMZ in a review still in progress, while The Guardian and Hardcore Gamer each score it 80.
In the campaign, Game Informer singles out the South Korean unit led by Park, but criticises a shaky story with rushed arcs as well as frame drops and late-loading textures in action-heavy scenes. In multiplayer, the deep weapon customisation, good map and weapon design and the new Combat Outpost mode with 24v24 battles impress. However, it lacks the fluidity of the newer Black Ops entries and can grow repetitive.
DMZ is seen as the highlight: Game Informer calls the mode, set on the Hajin map, the best extraction mode in the series. GameSpot praises the new progression but criticises that DMZ is no longer free-to-play, offers only six story missions and gives Vault Edition buyers an advantage. Hardcore Gamer doubts DMZ's long-term retention and criticises multiplayer matchmaking.
