Twelve days before the Nov. 3 midterm elections, President Donald Trump called on Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota to resign during a rally at the Sioux City, Iowa, airport. He cited a Fox News report published the same day claiming Omar had been sworn in under a different name and describing an ongoing investigation. No evidence has been made public.
Omar's spokesperson called the report "completely false" and said Ilhan Omar is her real name, according to the Iowa Capital Dispatch. On Oct. 12, federal agents searched Omar's Washington home; a Justice Department official said the probe concerns her immigration paperwork. Omar denies wrongdoing.
The rally was held mainly for Republican Senate nominee Ashley Hinson, who faces Democrat Josh Turek. Trump also defended a contested campaign ad by Vivek Ramaswamy in Ohio that Republican Gov. Mike DeWine had called "just wrong."
