Election officials in Los Angeles are disputing a US Justice Department list of about 20,000 alleged noncitizens registered to vote. A “high percentage” of the people listed were born in the United States, the officials said, according to Democracy Now. The findings come from a California court filing submitted on Tuesday in a lawsuit brought by the Trump administration.
Last week, the department had given California 48 hours to segregate the ballots of the people on the list. “At best, this litigation is a reckless political stunt,” the state’s filing says. “At worst, it threatens to disenfranchise thousands of Californians this election.” The dispute comes in the final stretch before the November 3 congressional elections.
