Matthäus advises Wirtz to think about his future at Liverpool

After the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, Lothar Matthäus recommends talks about the Germany international’s situation at Liverpool. He considers a move to Bayern unrealistic.

Lothar Matthäus used his Sky column to discuss Florian Wirtz’s difficult situation at Liverpool. If the Germany international keeps being criticised there and does not show his joy in playing, player, club and everyone involved should sit down and look for a solution, Germany’s record cap holder wrote, according to SID. Matthäus sees interest in Spain and at Chelsea, coached by Wirtz’s former Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso.

A move to Bayern Munich, however, he considers unrealistic. Pointing to the depth of Bayern’s attack around Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala, he wrote: “At the moment I wouldn’t know where to put Wirtz.”

With the national team, though, Matthäus sees the 23-year-old on the right track: “Florian Wirtz has impressed me with the national team recently.” There, as once at Leverkusen, his team-mates look for him, while at Liverpool others get the ball. Wirtz scored in the 2-0 win over Serbia on 1 October but was criticised again after his club’s 3-0 defeat to Manchester City at the weekend.
