Polish police on Sunday arrested a man suspected of planning an attack on Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced the arrest. According to the Reuters news agency, the suspect is in his sixties and was detained in Lower Silesia; investigators reportedly traced him through material he had posted online. His name has not been released. The warning also concerned Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Earlier on Sunday morning, police, the State Protection Service and Interior Ministry officials had held an emergency meeting. Jacek Dobrzyński, a spokesman for the special services, said the information was being treated as "serious", according to Al Jazeera. Tusk confirmed the arrest on X and thanked the police for acting quickly.
The authorities initially gave no details on the motive, the method or any accomplices, and nothing was known about charges. Poland is currently on heightened alert: according to the AP news agency, there were three attacks at schools in Mazovia province within four days. Officials have not linked them to this case. In September Tusk warned of intensified Russian hybrid attacks; Moscow denies any such plans.
