Germany's construction industry expects fewer than 200,000 homes to be completed in 2026, down from 206,000 in 2025. Olaf Demuth, president of the industry federation, told the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung, according to ZDFheute.

Demuth called for state support through low-interest loans backed by guarantees of up to 60 billion euros. The aim is to give households, families and investors easier access to capital, as the capital market is demanding ever more collateral. The industry links its demand to the country's housing shortage.
