Prime Minister Rumen Radev met in Sofia with EU Commissioner for Budget, Anti-Fraud and Public Administration Piotr Serafin. The talks took place on the eve of EU debates on the 2028-2034 Multiannual Financial Framework, the government press office said. Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Galab Donev and Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Pekanov also attended.

Radev said Bulgaria currently has an excessive deficit and is working to reduce its budget deficit for 2027. This must be done, however, while taking into account the effects of fiscal policy on the social sphere and the economy, he said. The statement gave no specific deficit target.

The prime minister described preserving the potential of cohesion policy and the Common Agricultural Policy as a priority for Bulgaria. He called for the size and scope of new national own resources to be carefully assessed, since they directly affect national budgets, and asked for a thorough impact assessment. Radev also said growing international uncertainty means the need for higher defense spending should be considered.
