Germany's benchmark DAX (its 40 largest listed companies) rose 1.31% on Thursday to 26,039.68 points. That took it above 26,000, back to its level of early September. The MDAX (mid-sized firms) gained 1.23% to 30,798.65. The tech index TecDAX added 0.89%, while the SDAX (smaller firms) was almost unchanged. The Euro Stoxx 50 (large eurozone companies) rose 0.64% to 6,207.07 (dpa-AFX, finanzen.at).

The European Central Bank (ECB) left its key rates unchanged despite high inflation. The deposit rate stays at 2.50% and the main refinancing rate at 2.65%. The ECB pointed to further rises in energy prices and said inflation risks are tilted upwards. It also emerged that Christine Lagarde will step down early as ECB president on 7 February 2027 (ECB, dpa-AFX).

adidas was the DAX's best performer, up 5.76% at €167.15. It raised its 2026 operating profit target from €2.3bn to €2.5bn and expects a return to growth in the fourth quarter. Volkswagen preferred shares rose 1.7% despite a third-quarter loss of €5.82bn, mainly due to a write-down of about €6.4bn on Porsche. MTU grew revenue by almost 14%; its shares were up 2.3% at midday (dpa-AFX).

Vonovia was the weakest DAX stock (−3.01%) after saying operating profit will likely land in the lower half of its target range. In the TecDAX, Aixtron jumped 8.48% to €34.14 after orders rose 122%. Today brings Germany's flash inflation, first Q3 GDP figures and results from Puma and Audi.
