Everton reached the League Cup quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Thursday. James Garner opened the scoring in the 34th minute after Amar Dedic lost possession, Hayden Hackney netted his first Everton goal just before halftime and Thierno Barry finished a counter-attack in the 69th. Newcastle defender Dan Burn headed in a consolation in the 89th minute.
Jack Grealish was left out for a disciplinary breach, Sky Sports reported, with manager David Moyes calling it a club decision. Newcastle coach Matthias Jaissle said: "We lack in the clinical approach to solve the situations."
Everton will travel to League Two side Fleetwood Town, who knocked out Arsenal earlier this week, in December. "It's a smallish squad we've got, and we're limited in some areas," Moyes said.
