Bulgaria's Commission for Consumer Protection (KZP) has fined three stores belonging to two large retail chains a total of 75,000 euros. Each fine is the maximum allowed by law. The violations fall under the unfair commercial practices section of the Consumer Protection Act. The chains were not named.

In two stores of the first chain, inspectors found that the shelf price differed from the price charged at checkout for the same product. In addition, the wrong country of origin was given for some fruits and vegetables. The violations were found on Oct. 22 and 25. At the second chain, a discrepancy between label and checkout was found in one store on Oct. 22.

At the same session, the commission, headed by Maya Manolova, also penalized distributors of imitation products, restaurants with misleading promotional flyers, tour operators and a hotel, as well as a trader that broke the rules on early repayment of a consumer loan. Consumers can report suspected violations on 0700 111 22.
