Keanu Reeves is taking the lead role in the Netflix film 'Maelstrom'. He replaces 'Reacher' star Alan Ritchson, who had previously been attached to the role, US trade outlets report, citing Variety. Why Ritchson left has not been disclosed.
Jaume Collet-Serra ('Carry-On', 'The Shallows') directs. The film is described as 'Die Hard in a hurricane': a federal marshal must protect the fiancée of an arms dealer who wants to testify against him. When a hurricane cuts off all contact with the outside world over a single evening, the two must hold out against the dealer's men without reinforcements.
The screenplay is based on a 1993 spec script by the late writer Gregory Fitzpatrick, which Mark Bianculli ('How to Rob a Bank') is revising. Producers include Jeff Robinov, who once helped develop the material. No start of filming or release date has been announced.
